Instagram bio link not working: the 2026 fix checklist
The URL is in the profile and still nothing happens. HTTPS, tracking wrappers, app cache, eligibility for Story stickers, and a page that never finishes loading.
“Link in bio not working” is usually one of five boring failures: the URL is not actually saved, Instagram will not treat it as a link, the phone is opening a cached error, a wrapper is looping, or the destination dies on mobile.
It is rarely “Instagram deleted links.” Check the plumbing before you redesign the brand.
1. Confirm it is a real URL in the Website field
Edit profile → Website / links. The string must start with https://. No spaces. No “www” missing a dot. Instagram will show text that is not tappable if it does not parse as a URL.
Save, force-close the app, reopen. iOS especially caches the old profile card.
Have a friend on another account tap it. If only you fail, it is cache or your own DNS.
2. Stop wrapping it to death
instagram → bit.ly → another shortener → http → final page is how you get interstitial warnings and timeouts.
One hop. HTTPS on the destination. If a security vendor flags the domain, change host or wait — do not stack more redirects.
3. Story stickers are not the bio
“Add link” on a Story can fail because the account is not eligible, the sticker expired, or you used a URL Instagram blocks. The profile bio URL is a separate system. Fix the field above before you debug stickers.
4. The page never becomes usable
From a phone on cellular:
- Does the first button appear in under ~2 seconds?
- Is there a cookie wall before the content?
- Does it ask for a Google login?
- Does it open as a PDF that the in-app browser hates?
If yes, people tap, see nothing, and you call it “broken.” It is slow or hostile. Same pattern as views without clicks.
5. You changed the URL and old paths 404
QR codes, YouTube descriptions, and last month’s Stories still point at linktr.ee/oldname. Keep one public hub. Change buttons, not the Instagram address, unless you are migrating for good — then put a redirect on the old URL.
A destination that stays tappable
Publish the hub on a host that serves HTML on the first request. LinkForge pages are built for that. Free to test the tap. 7€/month if you want links.yourname.com so the URL looks like a site, not a tool.
FAQ
The link shows but is grey / not tappable
It is probably not stored as a URL (missing https, extra characters) or Insights-only accounts sometimes lag. Re-paste, save, reinstall is the ugly last step.
It works in Safari but not in the Instagram in-app browser
Your page uses a feature the in-app WebView blocks (some logins, some scripts). Simplify the first screen.
Does a custom domain fix “not working”?
Only if the old problem was a flagged shortener or a dead Linktree slug. DNS must be correct or you swap one breakage for another.
